St Mary's Church, North Creake

North Creake Church
St Mary the Virgin, in North Creake was built across the 14th, 15th & 16th Centuries. The church stands proudly on the road through the village, with views over the valley up to a background of rolling hills.

The chancel, porch door and much of the nave date from 1300 and the tower, arcades and chancel date from 1430-1500.The excellent perpendicular windows are associated with Sir William Calthorpe, whose will of 1495 financed much of the work.

The 15th century medieval hammer beam roof reveals outstanding workmanship, with wooden carved saints and angels holding musical instruments and shields, and King Charles 1 has connections with the church as the Royal Arms over the North door were made for him.

The bishop’s chair, reredos featuring Jacob, Moses and the Last Supper, together with the triple sedilia are characteristic of early 15th century church life.

Music also flourishes at St Mary’s. The organ has been recently renovated and is a large, heavy toned instrument by Norman & Beard of Norwich. The choir stalls are in regular use by our 24-strong Creakes Choral Group for concerts and holy days. The community proudly hosts the summer chamber music North Norfolk Music Festival concerts.

Church Historian Simon Jenkins selects St Mary’s North Creake in his book of England’s 1000 Best Churches.

We shall be delighted to welcome all visitors to St Mary’s North Creake and hope you will enjoy the experience. Should you visit, then please do not miss the opportunity to purchase from the fine sample of jams and marmalades, made by villagers from fruit grown and harvested in and around North Creake.
